Expressions of Interest

“Expressions of Interest is a collection of texts produced in 2022, inaugurating the first writer’s residency program hosted by RM Gallery. The recipients of this residency were prompted by an open brief, inviting a range of different outcomes. With no thematic direction, or cohesive slogan, writers were free to follow any thread.

In offering this platform, RM Gallery seeks to support emerging writers and creative practitioners, commissioning experimental texts that are otherwise scarcely funded or platformed. The title of this publication takes its name from the traditional expression of interest (EOI), the much dreaded cover letter sent to prospective employers. Of course, hobbies, interests and passions are now part and parcel of these exchanges. In a market dominated by the service industry, the hollowed veneer of personality, the feigned smile, are the necessary prerequisites of employment. Despite appearing innocuous, unsolicited even, an expression of interest makes a direct appeal to the desires of an employer – to what we imagine they might need and want from us. But what if the EOI – its injunction – were to be taken literally, without recourse to a prospective boss: here, an alibi, whose wants we can more easily discern? What if we were to instead confront the jarring ambiguity of this injunction – the radical enigma of the Other’s desire, and our own in return?

Write about what interests you…”
